CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

Caustic soda is a strong base and its properties reflect this characteristic. Above all, caustic soda is an extremely corrosive product.

  • Corrosive for the eyes and the skin. (See chapter 2.Health Risks)

  • Metal Corrosion.

Caustic soda violently attacks a certain number of metals, which should be totally banned when using it: aluminium, copper and its alloys, lead, zinc. (The corrosion is accompanied by a hydrogen discharge and therefore a riosk of fire andexplosion).

  • Influence on steels.

Caustic soda is not tottaly inert to steels. Corrosion rates are low but require certain precautions:

     it should be noted that:

  • The corrosion rate increases with the temperature (be careful with heating devices) and agitation.

  • The corrosion rate increases with the concentration.

  • This corrosions leads to an increase in impurities (iron) in the caustic soda.

  • Corrosio, of the stress corrosion type, decreases as the steel’s nickel content increases.

Stainless steel with a high Ni content (Stainless steel 304 or 316) is suitable at standard operating temperatures.

  • Reactivity to the other products.

Caustic soda reacts extremely violently to strong acids. This reaction increases with the reactant’s concentration. Caustic Soda in incompatible with all peroxides, which it decomposes immediately.

  • Exothermic reactions.

A lot of the chemical reactions involving caustic soda are highly exothermic. This is partly due to caustic soda’s very high
solution heat at concentrations above 25%.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Liquid caustic soda is a viscous, colourless, odourless, non-flammable, non-volatile solution. The table below shows the main physical characteristics of this product. Some of them vary significantly according to the concentration:

  20% 30%   50%

  Density at 50oC: kg/m3 1.202 1.309 1.504
  Setting point: oC*  -25 3 12
  Setting point: oC 108 117 142
  Viscosity at 50oC: centipoises* 1,93 4,38 15,8
                     a 20oC: centipoises  4,43 12,6 120

* This explains why, from a 30% concentartion upwards, this product is delivered and handled at temperatures above room temperature.
