Automotive Exteriors

Decorative & Protective PVC Profiles & Trims

Solvay’s comprehensive range of rigid and plasticized PVC is used to manufacture decorative and protective profiles for automobiles. Not only is PVC able to withstand all weather conditions, it boasts excellent scratch resistance and resistance to oils and hydrocarbons.

Special grades of glass fiber-reinforced PVC offer extremely high rigidity and a linear dimensional stability that rivals aluminum.

Profiles can be manufactured by co-extrusion or co-injection.

Protecting the Underbelly

Plasticized PVC is ideal for the manufacture of protective coverings for the steel sheeting and welded parts found on the underside of cars. PVC’s many advantages include its waterproof qualities, resistance to flying gravel, protection against corrosion, durability and the ease with which it can be gelated in paint drying ovens at low temperatures.

Spray coating or “spraying” is the process used to manufacture PVC automotive protections.

Rain or Shine, You’re Covered

Because of its excellent weathering properties and resistance to dirt and grime, plasticized PVC is tops for the manufacture of tarpaulins for trucks. Moreover, because it’s easy to print on, a touch of branding or other key messaging adds even greater value.

Tarpaulins are manufactured by coating or dip coating polyester fabrics.

Watertight Seals and Gaskets

Plasticized PVC is a “go to” product for the manufacture of car window seals and gaskets of various levels of hardness. It is highly valued for its watertight qualities, suppleness and compression set.

These products are manufactured by extrusion of profiles or over-molded injected parts.

Automotive Interiors

Versatile PVC can take the form of soft leather-like seating to attractive to scratch-resistant dashboards and panels. Not only that, high- density PVC sheets can keep the inside of the car comfortably quiet.

Artificial Leather - Durable and Design-Friendly

Artificial leathers are nearly omnipresent. In automobiles they can be found as seat upholstery, seat trims, panel shelves, sun visors, and more. Artificial leathers are produced in an array of aesthetically pleasing colors and designs, and are not as vulnerable to wear and tear.

Sound Insulator - Bringing Down the Decibels

High-specific-density PVC sheets are incredibly effective for sound insulation. To keep the inside of the car comfortably quiet, PVC sheets are used to dampen engine sounds and exterior noises.

Sound insulation sheets can be produced either by the extrusion or calendaring process. A thermoforming machine shapes the product.

Door Panels & Dashboards - Check the Dashboard

Plasticized PVC has long been a preferred product for the manufacture of car dashboards and door panels, thanks to its attractive, leather-like look and feel, its ability to withstand high temperatures, and its formidable scratch-resistance.

A "low-fog" resin has been developed for the manufacture of these products. Car dashboards and door panels are manufactured by slush-molding, calendaring or coating (emulsion-type resins).

The automotive industry uses embossed sheet/films for dashboard and interior surface protection. To that end, Solvay’s ambient cure cross-linkable polyolefin materials will provide the required protection thanks to their high abrasion, chemical and scratch resistance, combined with their wide operating temperature range (-50°C up to 125°C).

PVC Cables - Cost-Effective Cables

Automobile cables are most often made from plasticized high molecular weight PVC. No wonder - PVC is favored for its high plasticizer content, excellent electrical insulation properties, fine resistance to water, oils and hydrocarbons, flame retardant qualities and suppleness. Even better, it is also highly cost-effective.

Cables are manufactured by extruding PVC for insulation and sheathing of metallic wires, or for composite cables.
